Comics of August 8, 2012

The comics I acquired this week include Gambit 1, Venom 22, Scarlet Spider 8, Batman 12, Fantastic Four 609, Batgirl 12, X-Men Legacy 271, Space Punisher 2 and Wolverine 311. I’ll link to my full reviews as I post them, but for now these are my first impressions.

Batgirl 12 review

Venom 22 was a satisfying conclusion to Rick Remender’s Venom run. The bulk of this issue is venom fighting Jack-O-Lantern in one final faceoff. There are also lots of flashbacks to Flash’s childhood and his abusive father, which complement the issue very well. It also won’t be too confusing if you haven’t read any of Venom’s series so far – check it out if you’re interested.

Fantastic Four 609 was a little confusing to me. It was good, but it was mostly about characters I know little about. I don’t feel qualified to say if I can recommend it or not.

X-Men Legacy 271 was good, but you won’t like it if you’re tired of Rogue taking over the title. If you like Rogue and the idea of her being trapped on another planet sounds good, check this issue out. If not, this should be an easy skip for you. This isn’t a bad jumping on point as this is the first issue in its story arc.

Space Punisher 2 was awesome. Space Punisher continues to hunt after the venom symboite and interact with various space versions of characters in the main Marvel Universe.  His fight with Deadpool and Sabertooth was simply entertaining, and Space Hulk is simply hardcore. This is an easy recommendation if the idea of the Punisher in Space appeals to you.

About healed1337

I am a relatively new comic book fan writing this blog for other new comic book fans and/or people who are interested in comics but don't know where to start. I've always been interested in writing, to the point where I have a college Creative Writing Certificate and I'm currently a year 2 Journalism student. I also have another blog where I mostly make fun of bad movies - www.healed1337.blogspot.com As for how I got into comics, I've always had a passing interest in superheroes: most notably Batman, Spider-man and the X-Men. Until February of 2011 (I think,) my only experience with any of these franchises came from the movies and video games. Shortly after I bought Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 however, I decided to check out X-23, Wolverine's female clone. I ended up reading her Innocence Lost origin story and enjoyed it. From there, I started reading various X-Men comics and it quickly exploded into my newest hobby. My other interests/hobbies include video games, movies, music, playing sports, my dogs and weird news.
