The comics I read this week include Amazing Spider-Man 692, Uncanny X-men 17, Batman Incorporated 3, Venom 23, Secret Avengers 30, Astonishing X-Men 53, X-Men Legacy 272, Youngblood 73 and Wolverine 312.
Uncanny X-Men 17 was good, and a decent AVX tie-in that has barely anything to do with the main event’s story. The story moves very fast yet it’s still not difficult to understand as long as you read issues 15 and 16. The art isn’t anything special though, and it holds this issue back. I still recommend it if you like Mr. Sinister or this series in general.
Venom 23 was awesome. It pits Venom against a cult lead by a rather powerful character in the Marvel Universe. It’s slightly related to the Circle of Four event in February this year (the “crossover” with Ghost Rider, Red Hulk and X-23) but you won’t have to read it to understand what’s going on. This is a great first issue for Cullen Bunn’s Venom run and an easy recommendation.
Secret Avengers 30 was great fun. Most of the issue is straight action with just a bit of plot development. Venom vs. Taskmaster, a motorcycle chase scene with Hawkeye and Valkyrie, and a very intense cliffhanger. This is an easy recommendation, although it might be a little confusing if you haven’t read the last issue.
Astonishing X-Men 53 was pretty good. The first half is a little slow with a bit too much dialogue, but it still contains little character moments and plot development. The second half is just awesome; it’s full of explosions, dark plot developments and Iceman’s “distraction.” It’s at least worth checking out if you want an X-Men story that has nothing to do with Avengers vs. X-Men.
X-Men Legacy 272 was fairly good, but not as fun as the last issue. It gives us a peek inside the hive mind that Rogue was fighting against in the last issue. It’s interesting, but it doesn’t feel all that original. It’s still worth checking out if you like Rogue, but keep in mind that she’s the only X-Men character in this story.
