Comics of September 5, 2012

The comics I read this week include Animal Man 0, Action Comics 0, Avengers Academy 36, Age of Apocalypse 7, Amazing Spider-Man 693, X-Factor 243, Venom 24 and First X-Men 2. These are my first impressions.

Edit:

Venom 24 was decent. I liked it more after a second reading (I wasn’t sure what to think after reading it once). It’s fun, dark and intense like Remender’s run. It’s still not as good though – it doesn’t explore Flash’s mind nearly as much as Remender did. Then again this is only Cullen Bunn’s second issue, so it could improve in the future. If you liked Remender’s run on Venom, at least check this out.

Action Comics 0 was good too. It shows Superman’s first act of heroism in the new 52, and the first time Lois Lane sees him. There’s a side adventure with a kid who “borrows” Superman’s cape for a day, and a backup story that introduces a recent villain in the Action Comics series. I hesitate to recommend this to those who have read Superman’s origin story before as I don’t know how it compares, but this is an easy recommendation for those who like Superman and haven’t read much outside of the new 52.

Age of Apocalypse 7 was good. It’s not as dark as the rest of the series has been so far. Most of the issue is spent hunting after AOA’s Doctor Doom, as suggested on the cover. It’s fairly easy to follow, even if you haven’t been reading this series so far as it explains the basics of the series with dialogue throughout the whole issue. This is a complete role reversal of the X-Men in the main Marvel Universe – Humans are fighting for survival against a world dominated by Mutants, who want to extinguish them. If that interests you, check it out.

About healed1337

I am a relatively new comic book fan writing this blog for other new comic book fans and/or people who are interested in comics but don't know where to start. I've always been interested in writing, to the point where I have a college Creative Writing Certificate and I'm currently a year 2 Journalism student. I also have another blog where I mostly make fun of bad movies - www.healed1337.blogspot.com As for how I got into comics, I've always had a passing interest in superheroes: most notably Batman, Spider-man and the X-Men. Until February of 2011 (I think,) my only experience with any of these franchises came from the movies and video games. Shortly after I bought Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 however, I decided to check out X-23, Wolverine's female clone. I ended up reading her Innocence Lost origin story and enjoyed it. From there, I started reading various X-Men comics and it quickly exploded into my newest hobby. My other interests/hobbies include video games, movies, music, playing sports, my dogs and weird news.
