As with the rest of DC’s 0 issues this month, Batman 0 is an origin story of sorts. This one takes place in Gotham, and Bruce Wayne is acting as a vigilante before he becomes Batman.
This issue works well enough, but it’s not as good as Scott Snider’s Batman usually is. It’s well written, but it’s not as fun or deep as usual. It doesn’t help that the main story doesn’t end with this issue, and won’t be continued until 2013.
The backup story is stronger than the main one. It’s about Batman’s various sidekicks and how they were inspired by Batman for the first time. It’s a neat little story that ties the Batman universe together in a touching way. The art is decent in both stories, but there’s nothing overly special about it.
There’s not much else to say about this without spoilers. If you’ve been enjoying Scott Snider’s Batman book, you’ll probably like this. If you’re not interested in re-reading Batman’s origins or about a pre-batman vigilante Bruce Wayne, you can safely ignore this issue.
