Welcome to another week of comic releases. My wallet’s probably thanking me for mostly ignoring both Infinity and Villain Month, so this is yet another light week. For the most part, the comics I picked up were good.
I picked up 7 comics, and all but one were Marvel. They are Uncanny X-Men 12 (Battle of the Atom part 4), Thor: God of Thunder 13, Cable and X-Force 14, Captain Marvel 16, X-Men Legacy 17, Superior Spider-Man 18 and Aphrodite IX 5. These are my first impressions; I’ll add links as they’re posted.
Thor: God of Thunder 13 was good. It’s no surprise that they’re bringing back Malekith before the movie comes out, but it looks like it’ll be a good story. It’s also nice to see that Lady Sif has something to do after Journey Into Mystery was cancelled. This is worth reading if you like Thor, or are curious about checking out a God of Thunder comic before the movie comes out.
Captain Marvel 16 would have probably been more enjoyable if I had been reading Infinity but as I said, I’m mostly ignoring that event. While the dialogue is very well written as usual for Kelly Sue DeConnick, it wasn’t as entertaining as it usually is. It probably would be better if the Captain Marvel tie-ins were telling a unique story within the event, but it feels as though it’s mostly adding to the main story. Still, this is at least worth reading if you’ve been enjoying the Captain Marvel series, even if you’re also ignoring the event. It’s also an easy recommendation to anyone who is reading the event.
X-Men Legacy 17 was great. It somehow manages to tie in Legion’s fight with Cyclops with the title’s main story. Everything is starting to fit together, and it’s building up to what could be an epic climax. David’s narrations about his hate for Cyclops work very well. Some new readers may be confused about the comic’s ending, but this is an easy recommendation for anyone who has been following this from the start. As for those who haven’t, you’re missing the most entertainingly weird series Marvel has right now.
Superior Spider-Man 18 was good. I don’t know if I’m quite digging the time-travel story involving Spider-Man 2099, but it’s well-written and fun. It also feels as though the Superior Spider-Man is soon going to have to face some consequences for some of his darker actions, and that will be interesting to see. Even if I don’t like this as much as the rest of the series so far, it’s still worth recommending.

UXM was great. All talking heads, but they were fascinating discussions. Present Scott and present Kitty actually seem to be thinking along similar lines; a very nice touch.
Thor was pretty cool. I’ve been reading Simonson’s Thor run, and I just finished the original Malekith story. This one handles him well. Sif’s presence made me feel sad, because I already miss JIM.
Cable and X-Force was pretty fun. Some good stuff.
Captain Marvel felt less personal than usual. I think the middle section, taken from last week’s Avengers #19, is the reason for that. It threw the whole issue off. Made it a lot less personal, in a series that’s at its best when at its most personal. It was still a good issue, just not up to the usual standards of this series.
XML was a bit much, at times. The fight was drawn well, but David’s narration got tiring, with how over-the-top it was.
Superior Spider-Man was pretty fun. Some good stuff.
