Every now and then it’s nice to have a small week for comics. It gives us more times to either re-read older stories or pursue our other hobbies, plus it’s easy on the wallet. I only picked up 6 comics this week. Also, I just started my third major edit for the second book in my novel series. In 3 days, I re-wrote 108 pages and so far I like how it’s turning out, although I feel the book’s opening could use some work (something I can focus on in detail after I finish my main sweep).
Anyway, the comics I picked up this week include All New Hawkeye 1, Angela: Asgard’s Assassin 4, Spider-Woman 5, Wolverines 9, Rocket Raccoon 9 and X-Men 25. Here are my first impressions, and links to full reviews will be added when they’re posted.
Angela: Asgard’s Assassin 4 is great. This series seems to get better with each entry, and even the first issue is good. A:AA 4 explains why Angela took Odin and Freyja’s newborn baby in the first place. The mythology is fascinating, the art is fantastic and the banter between the Guardians is hilarious at times. This is probably my favourite comic of the week, and if you’re interested in learning about Thor’s long-lost angelic sister, you should pick this up.
Wolverines 9 is decent. This issue is split in half between Daken’s adventure with Fang and bits of focus on the other regulars in their downtime. I’ve never enjoyed Daken as a character, but this exploration of him works. He obviously hasn’t lost his violent edge, but he seems to be realizing some of his faults through Wolverine’s death. The Fantomelle scene is just fun, and the character focus on Deathstrike and Shogun is very well written. This is a good character-focused issue, but the focus on Daken drags it down for my tastes. If you like Daken, you should read this whether you’re picking up Wolverines or not.
Rocket Raccoon 9 is great. It’s a bit of a bizarre story set in a future where Rocket and Groot have gone their separate ways and if I say much more, it will spoil the fun. It’s funny, the art is delightful and those itching for a comedic series should be picking this up already.

All New Hawkeye was excellent.
Angela was great. Humour, action, drama, a terrible pun, gorgeous art, an interesting story – lots to love here.
Spider-Woman was really good. Much, much better than the first arc.
Wolverines was kinda bad. Really lame. Though I do enjoy it when Daken gets trolled. And the Fantomelle scene was cute. Her horrible flirting made me like her more.
Rocket Raccoon was weird, but definitely fun.
X-Men was great. More solid character work from Wilson.
