Comics of October 5, 2015

I picked up 6 comics this week, 3 from Marvel and 3 from DC. Normally I prefer Marvel, but their titles are all at least $4 these days, and first issues are often $5. All of Civil War II’s comics are also $5 so far. Compare that to all of DC’s titles being $3 and with today’s comics, I could easily have picked up 7 DC comics for less than I paid for 3 Marvel and 3 DC. DC’s comics have been really good for the most part lately, while Marvel’s been changing a bit too much too quickly. It’s one thing to have a diverse cast of characters, but they’re coming up with too many minority characters too quickly and it’s starting to feel like diversity for diversity’s sake. That’s not good storytelling.

Anyway, the comics I picked up this week include Death of X 1, Champions 1, All-New Wolverine 13, Superman 8, Batman 8 and Nightwing 6 (the last 2 are part of the same crossover). Here are my first impressions, and links to full reviews will be added when they’re posted.

Death of X 1 review

Superman 8 review

Champions 1 is fun. With all the darker stories at Marvel lately, it’s nice to see a more optimistic series start up, not to mention a superhero team book starring mostly teenaged characters. Since I probably won’t get around to reviewing this issue, I’ll also say that Humberto Ramos’s art seems to fit this kind of series better than Extraordinary X-Men. If you don’t like his work this won’t change your mind, but still. If you’re interested in this series, it’s definitely worth picking up.

Batman 8 and Nightwing 6 are good. This is basically a Batman crossover involving a bunch of monsters attacking Gotham City, with Hugo Strange behind everything. If that sounds interesting, check it out. Not sure what else to say about this crossover to be honest.

About healed1337

I am a relatively new comic book fan writing this blog for other new comic book fans and/or people who are interested in comics but don't know where to start. I've always been interested in writing, to the point where I have a college Creative Writing Certificate and I'm currently a year 2 Journalism student. I also have another blog where I mostly make fun of bad movies - www.healed1337.blogspot.com As for how I got into comics, I've always had a passing interest in superheroes: most notably Batman, Spider-man and the X-Men. Until February of 2011 (I think,) my only experience with any of these franchises came from the movies and video games. Shortly after I bought Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 however, I decided to check out X-23, Wolverine's female clone. I ended up reading her Innocence Lost origin story and enjoyed it. From there, I started reading various X-Men comics and it quickly exploded into my newest hobby. My other interests/hobbies include video games, movies, music, playing sports, my dogs and weird news.

Some great new books this week. I wasn’t impressed with the first part of the Monster Men crossover, so haven’t bothered with the other parts. I also passed on Death of X, just didn’t interest me that much. I really enjoyed Invincible iron Man #14, think its the best of the Civil War II tie-in’s, Green Arrow was also great, and I was very impressed with Champions as well. Have a great new comic book day!

I don’t blame you for skipping Death of X – I wasn’t looking forward to it that much either, but gave it a chance because it’s a minor X-Men event. I’m getting sick of the Terrigen mist story arc though and that’s already a central part of Death of X.

TBH the only X-Men book I read now is All New X-Men, I’ve really gone of the other main books. I agree, the Terrigen mist story arc is too draw out. The X-Men titles need a major overhaul.

Death of X was meh. Madrox’s death annoys me.

Champions was good. Fun. Some fun character interactions.

    Wolverine was great. Really tense.
