Christmas is coming up fast, so it’s kind of a relief that I’m only picking up 5 comics this week. I considered picking up the first issue of Gamora, but with a number of X-Men titles coming out, I didn’t want to commit to too many new titles. I’ll at least pay attention, and if it gets good reviews, I’ll pick it up in trade.
The comics I picked up include The Mighty Captain Marvel 0, The Ultimates 2, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra 2, Batman 13 and Superman 13. Here are my first impressions, and links to full reviews will be added when they’re posted. Also, I hope everyone’s done all, or at least most of their Christmas shopping.
The Mighty Captain Marvel 0 review
The Ultimates 2 is great. The first issue was mostly build-up for the newly reformed Ultimates team. This issue is kind of also build-up, but there’s also a tense court-room like scene between Galactus the life bringer and three very powerful forces in the universe. The ending is just epic, and could potentially have huge implications for the Marvel Universe as a whole depending on how later issues turn out. Like the first volume, this is shaping up to be a very creative and very epic series.
Superman 13 is fun. After a misunderstanding in the last issue, Superman and a Frankenstein-like agent chase down an alien murderer with some strange abilities. The story ends up turning tragic when you learn about Frankenstein’s relationship with his ex-fiancé, contrasted beautifully with a quick montage of Superman hanging out with his family. It’s not the best issue in this series, but it’s more effective than I thought it would be after the first action heavy issue. This series strikes a great balance between a superhero comic and a family drama, and if that interests you, pick this series up.
Captain Marvel was good. It shows some promise.
Ultimates 2 was really good. I really like how Ewing gives it a Christmas theme. Ghost stories for Christmas? Neat.
