My goals for 2018, and some of this year’s accomplishments

So my local comic shop still didn’t get this week’s order. I still feel the need to post something other than my short rant on the comic shipping company. I might eventually write a delayed first impressions post, but because I’m working a lot for the rest of the year, by the time I’d get time to write comic reviews, it won’t be worth it anymore. So here’s a look at some of my accomplishments this past year, as well as some of my shortcomings. I’ll also be setting some goals, some to do with this blog, and some that don’t.

For physical goals and accomplishments, I have three goals. But first, the backstory.

In October or so of 2016, I got back into swimming after barely ever swimming since I was a kid. This was inspired by Canada actually doing well in swimming at the Olympics. It reminded me that I liked swimming, and I figured it was worth trying out as an extra form of exercise. In February or so, I decided to learn how to swim butterfly. I swam my first ever length around April or so, after several months of experimenting, watching instructional videos and failing badly at first. On my 30th Birthday in June, I completed my first ever 50m butterfly. Several months later, I upgraded that to a 200m individual medley (50m of each stroke, starting with butterfly).

Last month, I had several workouts where I swam multiple 50m butterflies on their own, and then went on to swim multiple 200m IMs afterward. Even sprinted a 100IM in about a minute and a half. The one time, I even swam a 75m butterfly. So I decided that my goal would be to swim the 400m IM by my 31st birthday. I accomplished that a week ago, more than five months early.

My swimming related goal is now being upgraded to where I can swim the 400IM in a 50 meter pool negative splitting all four strokes (going faster in the second length than the first), and being able to complete it in under 8 minutes. That’s nowhere close to Michael Phelps’s world record of 4:03:84 (the longest standing world record in swimming), but much faster than the 9 and a half minutes I swam in the short course last Wednesday.

My second physical goal has to do with Kung-Fu, where I want to get to my next belt much faster than I’ve been progressing so far. That would take more practicing at home. My third goal is to lose a bit of gut weight. I’m not unhealthy big by any means, but I’d still like to be thinner around the gut. I wouldn’t mind staying the same weight or even gaining some if it’s muscle instead though.

For this blog, I wanted to talk about movies more often, but because I work shiftwork, I don’t often get to see movies in theaters when they’re out. Apart from Logan, I didn’t find the time to see any of this year’s superhero movies in theaters. I’ve only seen Logan and The Last Jedi so far all year. So instead of waiting until Blu-ray releases to talk about movies, I decided to do a couple movie blogathons. I completed my Disney movie blogathon over the course of three months (56 movies from Disney Animation Studios), and earlier this month I completed an X-Men movie blogathon. My goal is to continue doing these movie blogathons, and I’ve got at least three planned for the New Year. I’ll start with Pixar, and then it’ll be Star Wars. Haven’t completely decided what the third one would be, but it might be going through all the live action Superman and Batman movies, or the Marvel Cinematic Universe up to that point. Or maybe Star Trek. It’ll probably be something nerdy.

For writing, my goal was to branch out now that I’ve completed my Blood Rage series (pretty much James Bond with vampires and werewolves), with a couple of experimental books, and completing or remaking older projects. I finished three novels of different genres this year. I hope to write at least one sequel to one of those books, and then experiment a bit more this year. But my main goal with writing is to start editing a backlog of first drafts I’ve built up in the last couple of years. Since editing doesn’t take all that long for me, my goal is to edit a book every month, except for the two Camp NaNoWriMo months and the main NaNoWriMo month, where I plan to write something new instead.

For reading, I really slacked off with novel reading this year compared to the last couple of years. My goal will be to read at least one novel a month. This could easily go hand in hand with my editing goal. I could easily edit a book in the first half of every editing month (two chapters a day should do it in most cases), and read a novel at some point in the second half. I’ll write a blog post for every novel I read for the first time. I’m actually reading one now, one that’s part of the new Star Wars canon.

I have other goals, but I don’t feel the need to write about them here. I hope you enjoyed reading. What are your goals for the New Year?

Until February of 2011 (I think,) my only experience with any of these franchises came from the movies and video games. Shortly after I bought Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 however, I decided to check out X-23, Wolverine's female clone. I ended up reading her Innocence Lost origin story and enjoyed it. From there, I started reading various X-Men comics and it quickly exploded into my newest hobby. My other interests/hobbies include video games, movies, music, playing sports, my dogs and weird news.

    Awesome goals! I put in my vote for the third blogathon series being live-action Batman films. I know a LOT about Marvel films, but not so much about Batman (having gotten ‘into’ DC movies only semi-recently) and I don’t care for Superman at all. 🙂 Anyway, that’s just my opinion on the matter.

    I’ll be talking about my goals for the new year in my annual New Year’s Tag post, but they include reading the Bible through and watching Dunkirk.

      I’m enough of a completionist that I’d do both Batman and Superman in the same series. I’d even go as far back as the silent serials from the 30’s and 40’s.

      Getting back into reading more of the bible is another one of my goals, which has also suffered from my general reading slacking this year. Look forward to seeing your post.

        Ah, that makes sense. Well, whatever you decide to do I’m sure I’ll enjoy it. I didn’t keep up with your X-Men series because I’ve never watched a single X-Men film and have little interest in doing so (except maybe Logan).

        My pastor has made excellent Bible reading plans available because he’s putting a big emphasis this year/next year on reading the Bible through. I’m excited to start the program.

    Awesome achievements and great goals for the new year! I didn’t get around to doing as many movie reviews or classic series Doctor Who reviews like I’d hoped in 2017, so I’d like to do more of those in the new year. I write on several sites now, so that keeps me busy too, which is always fun. Here’s to another great year of blogging in 2018 🙂
