The first issue of Gambit’s new series is a basic introduction to the character. There are no other pre-existing characters in this issue, at least as far as I know. It’s simply Gambit returning to his thieving routes. For that it’s a great issue, but that doesn’t mean every Gambit fan will like it as much as I did.
Those who haven’t read a lot of Gambit in the past might not enjoy this all that much. The IGN and Comicbookresources reviews were lukewarm at best, saying that this kind of Gambit story has been done before. Other reviews and comments I read praised it. For a new reader like me, this is the perfect issue. X-23’s solo series turned me into a Gambit fan, and now there’s finally a series where he can do what he does best.
This comic basically feels like a combination of a heist movie and a bond movie. The bulk of the issue is Gambit sneaking into a mansion at a party and stealing something that looks valuable. He also talks to the ladies and has a decent, if short, fight scene. The best part is when the comic reveals how he used his new gadgets. That’s really all there is to this issue, and if that’s what you’re looking for, you’ll have a good time.
The art isn’t all that special though. While some of the close ups look good, all of the characters in backgrounds or smaller panels are either smudged or lacking detail in general. The backgrounds are more often bland than not. The art isn’t necessarily bad, but it’s not good either.
If a simple story about a character returning to his thieving routes interests you, this is worth checking out. It’s not particularly original, but it doesn’t have to be as long as the rest of the series builds on this issue’s premise.
